Safety message from the London Fire Brigade for Lag BaOmer

24th May 2016
It is traditional to light bonfires on Lag BaOmer eve to commemorate the light that Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai introduced into the world via his mystical teachings. As we celebrate Rabbi Shimon’s life and the revelation of the esoteric soul of Torah, we also remember Lag BaOmer carries the theme of the imperative to love and respect one’s fellow (ahavat yisreal).

Bonfires can be exciting but it’s important these simple tips are followed  to  ensure everyone enjoys a safe and happy Lag B’Omer:

Bonfire Safety
  • Tell your neighbours that you plan to have a bonfire
  • Build your bonfire well clear of buildings, garden sheds, fences, hedges or cables above the fire
  • Bonfires generate a lot of heat so ensure the size of your bonfire is not too large for the location
  • Ensure everyone remains at a safe distance from the fire as burning materials could fall out of the fire without warning
  • Remember to wear safe clothing near bonfires, metal buttons and studs can get hot and plastic clothing may melt
  • Never use flammable liquids to start a bonfire and never burn dangerous items such as aerosol cans, paint tins, foam furniture or batteries
  • Don’t leave bonfires unattended. An adult should supervise it until it has burnt out. If it has to be left, damp it down with plenty of water
  • Always keep a bucket of water or a hosepipe nearby in case of fire

Organising Special Events
If you plan to organise a special event you can make sure your event is safer by ensuring the following fire safety and prevention measures are in place.  Help yourself stay safe by using our simple guidance:
Picture
  • Be aware of the locations of emergency exits
  • Listen carefully to any safety advice given
  • Notify a member of staff if you notice that a fire exit is blocked, or fire doors have been wedged open
  • If there is a fire, stay calm and raise the alarm
  • Move as quickly as possible. Don't try to pick up valuables or possessions
  • If necessary call the fire brigade on 999 and clearly state the address of the fire
  • Do not attempt to fight a fire yourself – seek assistance from the event organisers
The Law
  • Under the Environment Protection Act 1990, local Authorities are permitted to use abatement notices to people who cause a nuisance through lighting bonfires. The maximum fine is £5000 for a domestic property and £20000 for a commercial property.
  • If the smoke from a bonfire drifts across a road and affects traffic by reducing visibility, action can be taken under the Highways Act 1990 and a fine could be issued.

If you are concerned about a fire risk that may be a danger to life, please  contact your local fire and community safety centre     during normal office hours.
